Imagine, when you put a couple of tablespoons on your salad you have just added 200 calories to your meal. Caesar dressing: 100 calories per tablespoon. A basic vinigarette with olive oil and some type of vinegar can also be a killer. 1 tablespoon of olive oil contains 159 calories. Even a small amount of this can add 100 calories to a meal. You really have to be aware of how many calories your dressings contain.

Some alternatives include buying the light salad dressings. These are readily available from supermarkets and are much better. There are some fat free varieties available and these can be as low as 15 calories per tablespoon. Much better than the fulol fat varieties. When you go to a restaurant, make sure you ask for your salad not to have dressing. If you want dressing, then ask for it on the side and see if they have a fat free dressing available/

Another option is a squeeze of lemon juice. You can either buy fresh lemons or a bottle of lemon squeeze which typically has about 5 calories per serve. A much better option. If you like an asian flavour then you can make your own dressing by adding fish sauce, lime juice, chilli, garlic and coriander. As long as there is no oil the calories are low and this gives a nice zing to an otherwise boring salad.

Mayonnaise – Again mayonnaise is another of those condiments which is made from whole eggs and can be a killer for your calorie count. A typical whole egg mayonnaise has about 150 calories per tablespoon. Wow another killer. If you really like mayonnaise then there are lower fat alternatives. Still having the taste of whole egg you can buy lower fat whole egg mayonnaise. A typical brand has about 65 calories per tablespoon. Of you are happy to have a fat free version these are available in supermartkets and a typical brand will have about 25 calories per tablespoon. When going to a restaurant make sure that you get your mayonnaise to the side along with your salad dressing, or even ask if they use fat free. This will help keep your calorie count down as well.

Sauces – Sauces are a great condiment which we love to add to a nice steak or a chicken breast. Again these can be big sources of hidden calories. Take for example a hollandaise or bearnaise sauce. A serving of hollandaise sauce can contain 100 to 200 calories depending on the brand or how it is made. Bearnaise is about the same. Dianne sauce and creamy mushroom sauce can have the same calories because these are made by adding cream.

Some alternatives include straight tomato ketchup. 1 tablespoon has 25 calories. BBQ sauce is the same. Any mustard is a good alternative having between 5 and 10 calories per serve depending on the type.

Remember just try to stay away from any creamy sauces, because these will just add those killer calories that you may not have accounted for. If you are dining out then ask for your sauce on the side and try and get a sauce which has no cream in it. Even a red wine jus is a better choice.
