Butterfly-shaped small glands below the Adam’s apple in front of the neck are called thyroid glands. They influence metabolism of body to a great extent. Iodine deficiency can cause hyperthyroidism. This is prevented by addition of iodine to table salt.

Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed through thyroid function tests and treated using synthetic thyroid hormones.
